Five Top Tips – Avoiding Computer Viruses

Countless hours and extraordinary amounts of money are lost each day due to computer viruses. Following the Clyde engineers’ five top tips will alleviate some of these problems:
  1. Don’t run unsupported operating systems – Windows XP is unsupported and should not be used in networks of any type.
  2. Acquire a recognised quality antivirus product – free is usually poor, and cheap is usually as bad as free. Here are some suggestions:
    • ESET: Clyde recommended ✓
    • F-Secure: Clyde recommended ✓
    • Kaspersky: Clyde recommended ✓
    • AVG: not recommended
    • McAfee: not recommended
    • Norton: not recommended
  3. Ensure whatever program you use for emails integrates with your antivirus. This will mean it can scan emails for viruses as they arrive – Microsoft Outlook is the most supported program out there.
  4. Do not open suspicious emails.
  5. Ensure your system is up to date – as well as Windows itself, your browser, Java, and Adobe Flash are key programs that require regular crucial updates. Most of these updates are to stop computer viruses.

And a bonus tip:

Ensure where possible that you have Microsoft User Account Control enabled unless you have good reason to disable it. This can stop 50% of computer viruses in their tracks, or at least significantly limit the damage caused.

While many overseas system integrators overlook these issues, Clyde Broadcast have ensured 100% of our partner radio stations remain virus free. Click here to discuss your systems with our team of engineers.
